about

A lost album of sorts . . . WINTER SOUL REQUIEM was originally intended to be the second Like Trees album, following the self-titled. Some of the writing dates back to 2010 when I began to write more about time and place and the spirit that flows through them. These songs track a nonlinear year in the Upper Mississippi River Valley of Wisconsin and Minnesota ending up surrealistically on the beaches of the Ryukyu Islands. A spiritual journey is chronicled of hopes, despair, demon possession, and annihilation. Something dies each passing year, yet life goes forth.

Effort on the album was siphoned into the indie rock trio that would eventually form in Minneapolis and take on the Like Trees name. Elaborate chamber pop/ folk wasn’t really going to go over in empty dive bars. The album title came to me in a dream and so it seems fitting to give it life even if it still feels to me unfinished around the edges and many years in the rearview. I can’t help but imagine a timeline where it’s complete. I’m afraid I haven’t done justice to the person who started the album, but of course I am not that person anymore.
